ROUND VALLEY - The season of giving got an early start in Round Valley when the American Legion Post 30 purchased new winter jackets, scarves and mittens for 36 children from the Head Start program.
Using donations from a summer rodeo, the post got a list of the children's clothing sizes and went shopping at Springerville's Alco Discount Store. Legion Commander Greg Cox and his wife Shelley had enough money to purchase winter jackets for the Head Start children and to also buy jackets for their siblings.
The wrapped gifts were presented to the children and their families Saturday, Oct. 13, at a special pizza luncheon held in their honor.
"What a joy it was to see the kids faces as they opened their packages," Shelley Cox said. "Alco gave us a good discount on the jackets, and we're very thankful to them and to The Other Pizza Place who donated the pizzas for our lunch."
